Whitley: Tim Tebow fans should be as gracious as their hero

Tim Tebow took his latest career blow better than his most devoted supporters
The Eagles judged Tim Tebow on his passing, not his personal beliefs

Tim Tebow has suffered another career setback. As always, he took it better than many of his fans.

They spent the weekend essentially telling Eagles coach Chip Kelly he could go to you-know-where. That locale has no fury like a Tebow fan scorned. And, boy, did they feel scorned after the Philadelphia tease.

Kelly traded Matt Barkley on Friday, so everyone assumed Tebow had won the third-team quarterback job. We were just the inevitable Sam Bradford injury and Mark Sanchez butt fumble away from Tebowmania II.

But the Lord and Kelly move in mysterious ways. Tebow was released Saturday, and his tweeted reaction was predictable.

“Thanks @Eagles and Coach Kelly for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love! Romans 8:28 #Blessed.”

It would have been nice if his most diehard followers were as gracious. But that’s never been part of the Tebow Show.

“Amazing how the nfl will allow woman beaters, drug addics, multiple dui offenders or even murders and pedophiles but we still cant allow religion in. it isnt about tebows skill set because he can play with anyone its his religion thats keeping him out. Time to wake up america.”

That was the typical Internet post. If you’ve read it once, you’ve read them 3.2 billion times .

I’d ask the diehards to stop, but blind devotion makes for polarization. And polarizing figures are writing gold (see: Trump, Danica, fugitive king cobras).

That said, I’m as bummed as the next fanboy that Tebow’s gone. Call me a sap, but I like to see good things happen to humble, clean-living and charitable human beings.

While much of the Tebow criticism has been fair, a lot of bashers simply see him as a Bible-thumping goody-goody. He long ago became a proxy in America’s culture war, with both sides too emotional to see the enduring truth:

The issue isn’t Tebow’s behavior off the field. It’s his behavior on it.

If anything, the NFL has bent over backward to employ Tebow. Denver made him a first-round pick when half the scouts said he was free-agent material.

The winning streak that triggered Tebowmania was a magnificent fluke. He couldn’t beat out Sanchez in New York. Bill Belichick tried and tried, but not even the Patriots Deflation Dept. could find a suitable PSI for Tebow.

If New England was an ideal situation, Philly was a perfect one. Kelly’s madcap offense is made for quarterbacks with the versatile skills Tebow showed at Florida.

The NFL’s a different animal. Defenses caught up to the read-option attack that clicked for Tebow in Denver.

He worked like a maniac to improve his passing. It was better this preseason, but not good enough to become a third-team quarterback.

“Tim’s really progressed, but we didn’t feel like he was good enough to be the No. 3 right now,” said Kelly, who Sunday claimed Hurricanes alum Stephen Morris off waivers from the Jaguars to be the third-stringer.

The true believers aren’t buying Kelly’s view, of course. They long ago became football’s version of birthers, convinced all Tebow needs is a chance with a properly supportive team.

He’s had four now. Those pink slips can’t all be due to coaches preferring murderers and pedophiles.

The bashers are now advising Tebow to go away for good. Kelly thinks a stint in the CFL would do him good.

I say go for it. Throwing live passes against the Edmonton Eskimos couldn’t hurt.

The only downside would be if Tebow gets cut. Then the diehards would accuse the CFL of being part of the anti-Timmy conspiracy.

Please folks, look at his farewell tweet. Romans 8:28:

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.”

Sad as it is, it’s time for everyone to accept that Tebow’s purpose is not to be an NFL quarterback.

I wonder if Chip Kelly and Urban Meyer are still friends.

To all this is a great article its not bashing Timmy.

Its well written and very true.

Timmy will be ok like I said in previous posts he will live off his college days as he deserves, look at at Kirk Herbstreet and he wasn’t 1/3 the player Timmy was. One thing I always sated I give Timmy his due in college football history and as a Denver Bronco. My posts have been clean and not attacking Timmy.

Its you his fans that are the problem for Timmy, but in your defense Timmy never said to you all back off and let me earn my way in the NFL. Timmy has benefited a great deal from the hype, TV gigs etc..

anyway have a good labor day

God bless the Denver Broncos and thank you John Elway

Well he has several options only time will tell??

He’s come this far, all the work on this attempt and such, why not the CFL? There he will those all important “Reps”.

I say the reason the Eagles Cut Tim Because someone or Team Members led by Sanchez and maybe some of the coaches Didnt want TIM THERE and Maybe Bradford Put his two cents in the mix Because they didnt want the fans and T2 hanging over their head like at Denver So KellY caved rather than having a locker room Mess.Because if Bradford got hurt and Sanchez threw a couple of INTs it would Been Tebow!!! TEBOW!!! Tebow!!! also maybe some of the Team Members were Jealous and the locker room rebelled.

I certainly believe that Sanchez is a common thread in all this..Jets and now Eagles. I thought that Kelly actually liked him, all the way to the last few hours before cutdown day. Then the public smackdown. It didn’t set well with a lot of people.

Buzzy.. FYI .. Specific to your conjecture, I think Kelly is the Betrayer!

Go into the comments section for this story and look for Mike Adams comment. I found it interesting anyway.

      TheMascotArmy..

I did a lot of searching (just now) thru 200+ comments so I will make
it a little easy by “Sticking it in here” – You are Right!
it is a very valuable insight into Chip Kelly and his Character and
      Values = Strange Illogical Decisions..
(BUT THE TRUTH CAN SET US {and HIM} FREE !!)>>>>

      I have a friend who knows a couple of the eagles players- both are still on the active roster. He gave me some supposed scoop;

First on Tebow – the entire team thought Tebow easily did enough to be the #3 QB and were sure he would make the team Said even though Kelly reduced his reps Tebow was making big strides toward the end of camp to the point that many felt he was starting to challenge Sanchez. Feeling on the team is that Kelly seemed really irked about the reception Tebow got in that first game (standing O chants of TEBOW etc.). They really knew he was gone when they got that first down inside the five during the last preseason game (after the INT) and Kelley did not call a single play for Tebow. Said Tebow knew it then as well.

Rasheed Bailey – they thought he would make practice squad for sure if not active roster.

Said some of the stuff Kelly does is “hard to figure out”, but they have to “roll with it.”

Third hand information – no idea how close it is to the truth.

I’ve seen only some of what the original author demonstrates as the “typical” comment. I think this board in particular has been very good about actually putting out hard numbers to demonstrate Tebow’s assets and what he brings to a team.

His game is a very physical type of game, not very conducive to long NFL careers. Ask any running back what a few years of pounding will do to a body. It’s not like these “pretty boy” QB’s who wear the red shirts every practice and maybe get one or two heavy shots a game.

I’ve always been very realistic on how long a QB like Tebow can play in the NFL with his style of play…maybe 5 or 6 years? That may give him 3 more good years. He’s a man in incredible shape so that could add another 2 to that total, barring major injury. I’m not even counting the Jets year, which was pretty much wasted.

The typical QB in the NFL if he’s any good can bounce around the league for 10+ years. I’m referring to a pure pocket passer who typically wouldn’t dare to leave the comforts of the pocket and get his uniform dirty. It’s not like it used to be. For those who would interpret that comment as “the game has passed him by” let me remind everyone that the game evolves constantly and there has to be a catalyst for change. It doesn’t have to look all the same like it does now.

Tebow has 3 years of NFL experience, 2 with Broncos and one with the Jets. Only the Broncos did he see meaningful contact so he still has a lot to give.

    So, what are his options?

He could wait for an NFL team to call. Certainly some teams need a lot of help. Some situations Tim could step in and thrive; others are nearly hopeless situations. Some teams are willing to take that chance. Some can’t get by their biases. A nice way to put this I guess is that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

He “could” try an alternative league like the CFL. The Montreal Alouettes have rights to him. Their OC is Anthony Calvillo, the most prolific QB is CFL history. He would be going to a place where at least the OC would be able to use his skills. Also, they have a bye week coming up this week so the next game would be on the 20th. Enough time for TT to get acclimated? Also, QB’s are not constrained by the national/international rules in the CFL that dictate a certain percentage of Canadian players have to be playing for a team.

Apparently he has looked at the CFL before, as recently as last year. Maybe he’s revisiting the option? He’s conditioned and game ready now.

Arena football has been bandied about as an option. Their season is over now and wouldn’t benefit Tim at all now.

Tebow may also say “This is it” and go straight back to media. I think his competitive fire burns too hot right now and he’s not conceding anything. He still has an athletic career ahead of him and he wants to pursue it.

So, the bottom line is that I trust Tim to make the right decisions for his career. He’s got talent, drive and someone a person could easily root for.

  6. David Oliver says:

THIS IS LIKE A BUNCH OF FRUIT LOOPS.. OF NO VALUE WHEN WE PLUG IT INTO OUR OWN KNOWN TRUE AND UNIQUE HISTORY OF THE NFL BLACKBALL OF TIM TEBOW:

Why is Tebow STILL “Black-Balled” by NFL?
Because he is too “Polarizing” (Code Word of “New Speak” For “TOO – CHRISTIAN”!!

YES I have heard of many OTHER players – who have confessed Christ, including Russell Wilson, previously and have rooted for them:
However, I have NEVER seen anyone of them – who dared to CONFESS – and THANK, “MY SAVIOUR – THE LORD JESUS CHRIST – at the Beginning of any Post Game interview – So THEY KNEW IT WAS COMING – from him – and could NOT do anything about it – until they got rid of him!

NOR have I seen the Rabid HATE Campaign against any player like TEBOW – To the Late Night Comedian, John Oliver, who said if he had one bullet – and had a choice between shooting Bin Liden or TIME TEBOW in the Head – HE WOULD SHOOT TIM TEBOW – yeah, this is all about his unorthodox throwing motion ? http://www.sportsgrid.com/nfl/daily-shows-john-oliver-hates-tim-tebow-like-he-hates-bin-laden-video/

Anyhow that is the main reason – I have been OUT there for him – because he had crossed “THEIR THRESHOLD” and They Declared WAR to GET RID OF HIM!

(THEY = $$ NFL and $$ NFL MEDIA and CONTROLLERS) and I believe THAT CAMPAIGN – is why HE HAS BEEN EFFECTIVELY – BANNED FROM THE NFL..
TEBOW HAS CROSSED “THEIR” ($$ and CONTROL PEOPLE) LINE – and IS NOW AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS – WHO MIGHT HAVE DARED TO DO THE SAME!

Basically – there is a “NOISE FLOOR” of FEAR – Such that Team owners, managers and coaches – are FEARFUL of the PERSONAL REPERCUSSION of ATTACKS on THEM – IF THEY DARED TO MAKE SUCH A MOVE..
IT is MUCH Easier to GO ANY OTHER WAY – WITHOUT THE RESULTANT ATTACKS from This Orchestrated Hate Campaign That Has been effective in Taking Tim Tebow away from any FAIR opportunity to show his “STUFF” In REAL GAME SITUATIONS in the NFL!

In many cases as with the JETS – They were AFRAID he would do WELL! SO THEY REFUSED TO USE HIM AT ALL AT QB, even if it meant continuing to lose. THEY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THEIR FANS !

NOW WITH THE EAGLES – HE DID DO WELL & THEY CHOSE TO IGNORE THIS – and INSTEAD CHOSE – TO FALL INTO OBEDIENT LOCK-STEP WITH THE REST OF THE “POWER BROKER’S CONTROLLED LEAGUE” AND CONTINUE ITS EFFECTIVE INFAMOUS TIM TEBOW NFL BLACKBALL CAMPAIGN!!

NOW TIM’s APPARENT LAST HOPE – CHIP KELLY, ALSO SHOWN HIS COLORS”

AGAIN ! BOYCOTT THE NFL – Till They FINALL RETREAT AND Remove this Tim Tebow “Black-Ball” Ban !!

    • ck says:

David O.: Yes, this writer is a CERTIFIED “FRUIT LOOP” AND WILL GRANT YOU THAT!!! ANYONE WITH TWO EYEBALLS AND SOME COMPREHENSION CAN SEE THAT TEBOW MADE THAT TEAM AND B/C OF UNDERMINING LESS THANS HAD IT TAKEN AWAY…TALK ABOUT DEVIOUSNESS/JEALOUS!!! AND YES, IT HAPPENED TO HIM AGAIN WHEN SANCRAPPER WAS AROUND…HMMMM!!! NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE WILL EVER CONVINCE ME THAT TEBOW IS NOT THE REAL DEAL AS A PROFESSIONAL QB IN THE NFL OR ELSEWHERE AS I HAVE SEEN HIM IN ACTION–JUST LIKE MILLIONS OF OTHERS HAVE PLUS, THERE IS TAPE PROVING IT AND IT DOESN’T LIE!!! THE ONLY CONCLUSION THAT IS THE RIGHT ONE IS WHAT BUZZY AND DAVID O., DAVID, DANNY, SAGE, TISA, TAWK2 AND ALL OTHERS WHO ARE PRO TEBOW HAVE APTLY STATED!!! OBVIOUSLY, GOD HAS THE FINAL WORD AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THE LOSER QBS THEY ARE PROMOTING OVER TEBOW…GUARANTEE IT WILL NOT BE PRETTY DUE TO WHAT GOES AROUND….!!
ANYWAY, TEBOW IS NOT GIVING UP SO THEY NEED TO GET OVER IT!!! WHY SHOULD HE WHEN HE NAILED IT SO MANY TIMES; IT IS CRAZY INDEED!!!

  7. ck says:

To prove it, I am donating what I would have paid to The NFL Channel and the jersey I was going to buy from The Eagles to T’s Foundation (btw that idea about the jerseys was an idea from Tisa and give credit for an excellent idea for putting money where it will at least support a much more worthy cause jmo!) Too bad Coach Kelly caved and thought he was stronger than that too! Like to know also what Urban thinks of that as stated above!
***When is Buzzy going to block this anti-Tebow delusional squawker? It goes without saying that Daniel Whitley should 100% be on that list and how desperate do you have to be to write that nonsense just for $$$?!!
