Tim Tebow didn’t enter the Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday until the fourth quarter, so he was forced to make up for lost time. While Tebow didn’t dispel the notion he isn’t good enough to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, he proved why he should remain on Philadelphia’s squad for the time being.

You can view Tebow’s final numbers below:

Recap and Reaction

The bulk of Tebow’s rushing output came on this designed QB run with six minutes and 37 seconds left in the game (via the NFL):

ALERT: Stampeding Tebow spotted in Philadelphia area. #BALvsPHI #TebowTime http://t.co/bZZtD79ZaV

If that scamper showed why Tebow can be a situational option for the Eagles in the regular season, a play on the previous drive demonstrated why the left-hander can’t be counted upon to actually lead Philadelphia’s offense for long stretches.

On a 3rd-and-3 at the Eagles’ 27-yard line, Tebow sat back in the pocket for what felt like an eternity. He failed to get rid of the ball and took a 12-yard sack. ESPN’s Robert Flores figured Tebow would make up for that play when he got to the sidelines:

#Tebow held ball for a LOOONG time before being sacked. #Eagles then turn it over. #Tebow will offer leadership and guttiness on sideline

247Sports.com’s Thomas Goldkamp made a very astute comment about Tebow’s style of play:

That comes down to Tim Tebow knowing he can score by running and trusting himself and his running ability more than his arm. Is what it is.

— Thomas Goldkamp (@ThomasGoldkamp) August 23, 2015

I guess my point is can Tim Tebow win games playing his way if not asked to be conventional? As a backup, to me, answer is yes.

A little later in the game, the former Heisman Trophy winner had a four-yard touchdown run at the two-minute warning wiped out after a video review. Kevin Monangai subsequently scored from a yard out on the next play.

Tebow and the Eagles had one more chance to put points on the board after forcing a turnover on downs with 52 seconds remaining. However, Philadelphia only ran two plays and let the clock run out.

All in all, it wasn’t a terrible performance from Tebow, and if anything, his stock stayed right where it was before the game. But it’s anybody’s guess as to whether that will help him earn a place on the Eagles’ final roster.

As Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ Advance Media observed, finding a middle ground between the pro-Tebow and anti-Tebow crowds can be so difficult because they’re almost unaware of how extreme their views often are:

What the Tebow haters don’t realize is that they are just as irrational as the Tebow supporters. #Eagles

At the very least, Tebow’s ability to tuck the ball and run should put him ahead of Matt Barkley in the QB race.

Fantasy Outlook

ESPN anchor Dianna Marie Russini reported Thursday that Chip Kelly is becoming increasingly sold on Tebow as a member of the team. You wouldn’t expect that to change after Saturday.

But before you start getting ahead of yourself, keep in mind the former Heisman Trophy winner is likely only a situational option for the Eagles. Russini threw out two-point conversion attempts and short-yardage situations as Tebow’s likely roles.

Either of those jobs makes a lot of sense for Tebow, given his skill set. And neither would make him much of a viable fantasy option, even in the deepest of leagues.

The other problem with the 28-year-old in a fantasy sense is the fact he’s third in the Eagles’ quarterback hierarchy. In the event Sam Bradford goes down with an injury—a very likely scenario given Bradford’s history—Mark Sanchez would almost certainly take over the starting job.

Whatever he does this preseason, that’s unlikely to change.

TheMascotArmy: Well said in regards to “DIMWITS” AND THEY JUST DON’T GET IT ESPECIALLY, WHEN HE WINS BY DOING WHAT WORKS INSTEAD OF WHAT DOESN’T!
YOU WOULD THINK A WIN IS WHAT COUNTS MOST NOT LOOKING LIKE YOU HAVE A PERFECT SPIRAL…REALLY, WITHOUT BEING CAPTAIN OBVIOUS THE BOTTOM LINE IS ALL ABOUT WINNING OR ELSE NO PLAYOFFS ETC. THEY SURE ARE OBTUSE!!!
