Philadelphia Eagles Rumors: Tim Tebow Climbing Up Roster, Could Take Matt Barkley's Spot

The Philadelphia Eagles picked up Tim Tebow this offseason in what many thought was an attempt to make training camp a bit more competitive, but as camp closes in, there are rumors that Tebow is quickly climbing the depth chart and could steal a spot on the final roster.

The quarterback with the erratic arm and grinding running style is increasingly being seen as a great fit for Chip Kelly, and Kelly’s recent statements about Tebow have been glowing.

Kelly implied that Tim Tebow has been a very quick learner and has shown abilities he hasn’t before grasped.

“I have seen an improvement from Tim since the day we got him in terms of his knowledge of what we’re doing, understanding where everybody is,” Kelly said, via the Delaware County Times. “There’s a whole process, and for him what we have done is different than what he’s done anywhere else.

“So in terms of learning our terminology and how we do things, I think each week you’ve seen an incremental bump in him, so we’re excited to see where that takes him and it’ll be a good competition as we get into August.”

Kelly picked up Tebow in April, and at the time the team’s other quarterbacks didn’t appear to be fazed. Mark Sanchez hinted that Tebow was a “camp arm” and Matt Barkley made it a point to say he didn’t feel threatened by the signing.

“He’s not taking my reps on the field,” Barkley said of Tebow, per “He’s an arm we need for the team, with (former quarterback) G.J. (Kinne) making the move to receiver. Tim’s just one of us. He’s trying to make the team just like we all are. It hasn’t affected my approach to how I feel the team thinks of me or how I’m going out to compete every day.”

But now, Tim Tebow could be threatening to take a lot more than snaps away from Matt Barkley. There are rumors among Philadelphia Eagles beat writers that Tebow could be moving in on the No. 3 quarterback spot that Barkley currently occupies, which would more than likely push Barkley off the roster entirely.

The Philadelphia Eagles rumors will likely come to bear in a few weeks, when the team meets for training camp and the hypothetical gains made by Tim Tebow can be tested on the field in real time. While there are good signs now, it could end up being similar to Tebow’s last go-round in the league, when he impressed at times in training camp for the New England Patriots but stumbled in the pre-season, ultimately being cut from the team.

Even I forgot about the wins in preseason.

On his very first drive for the Patriots, the team looked like a ground-eating beast. Belichick used the spread and Tim and the backs chewed up yards in an incredibly tough fashion. Touchdown. BB probably wanted to prove he could use that system.

Frankly, I don’t know why coaches wouldn’t sell their souls for that kind of attack.

The 2-yard checkdown passes are so dull anymore.

Speaking of Tebow with the Patriots in preseason, here’s one. It appears that Quentin Sims is out of the league. How can this be? Tebow found him for three touchdowns. Put in a good word for him, Tim.

I found this compilation of Tebow practicing at OTAs/Minicamp in Philly

Quentin Sims was placed on the practice squad and eventually cut by the Patriots. I don’t see him listed in the active players list. The Patriots also had a scrimmage with Tebow and Sims on the blue team and Brady and Mallett on the white team. Tebow connected with Sims twice for long TDs and the blue team won 17-14. Brady threw a TD to Amendola for the white team and Belichick let him run the same play again successfully. Mallett didn’t score. At the time, I had to read three articles on this event to figure out that Tebow had won. No reporter would just say it plainly.

Maybe some of this is good to show Eagles Fans who are wondering. As for anyone else?

The Media isn’t going to do anything other than what it always does. If Tim makes the Eagles, gets a decent amount of Playing time and is productive, Tim will be getting heaped with all sorts of praise and some negative. Other than perhaps some Eagles Fans, what people think now is what they’re going to think til the day they die.

The good news for Tebow Fans that keeps getting under-appreciated is how few people actually look down on Tim as a Person, Player and Quarterback. Sometimes it seems like people want to engage with the handful of idiots who get off on dissing Tebow than be happy how few of them there really are.

I know that’s tough with the way the league has treated him. As well as much of the Media. But the thing to keep in mind about Sports Media is most of it spends their time with the Teams. GMs don’t like admitting they don’t want Tim around because they don’t want to bother with all of the Fans and Media attention. So they usually try to throw in phrases like “skill-set” to give themselves plausible excuses. Much of the Media just goes along with that even if they disagree with the skill assessments.

You have to remember this is the same Media that cancels popular shows because they make the NFL uncomfortable, ended up airing an NFL expose on PBS and is threatening to not renew Keith Olbermann unless he stops saying negative things about Roger Goodell.

NFL Media suffers from Stockholm Syndrome.

Brandi: Think we have heard of the quote un quote SKILL SET before by someone who is not to be mentioned, te he!

      • brandi says:

Yep. And that about sums it up.

When you have Tim polling so overwhelmingly high among the Fans the way he consistently does, it’s time to question the motives of those who work so hard to call everyone idiots. (I include NFL GMs in that as well BTW)

Take a poll who believes tim will make the rosters for the philadephia eagles
