Fired Tim Tebow Finds Home in Philadelphia; Roster Spot Almost Guaranteed

Tim Tebow isn’t a worthwhile starting quarterback in the NFL anymore, but he is a great football player. Head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles Chip Kelly recognizes this and understands the changes happening in the pro game. Kelly’s style of exciting and risk taking coaching makes bringing in the former Heisman-winning University of Florida star as an added commodity a lot of sense. Kelly knows that with Tebow’s athletic ability he can almost guarantee to be able to find him a home on the roster as a special package player.

The NFL recently changed its rules regarding its extra point attempts with the extra point kick being moved back to make it a 33 yard try. The thought is that more 2-point conversions will be tried instead of the further away kick. The Philadelphia Inquirer has former teammate of Tebow’s Eric Decker’s thoughts about how Tebow could be used (via Inquirer):

“Really, he can create his own role. I know he wants to be [a starting] quarterback, but he can…help a team in many ways [like] a two-point conversion…or a goal-line package. He has the athletic ability to be a personal punt protector, and he can play other positions. They’ll figure out a way to utilize him if it’s going to help them be a better football team.”

This could work because Tebow has been a fairly accomplished runner in the NFL. Sporting News translates how having Tebow could work:

“Tebow has recorded 197 carries in his career for 989 yards, 12 touchdowns and 5.0 yards per carry. A goal-line package with Tebow at quarterback and DeMarco Murray in the backfield gives the offense lots of options. Third-down conversion attempts are similar in this fashion, particularly out of a zone-read offense.”

Chip Kelly has made some questionable moves before, but this one at least seems to make sense.
