Chip Kelly: Eagles didn’t sign Tim Tebow just to have him practice (TKS DO)

Tim Tebow

PHILADELPHIA — Maybe Tim Tebow has a shot to make the Eagles after all.

Speaking on the NFL Network, Eagles head coach Chip Kelly refuted statements made by quarterback Mark Sanchez last month that Tebow was signed solely as a practice arm.

“No. I think everybody here that we bring to our organization is here to compete for a job. That’s what Timmy is going to do,” Kelly said. “He’s an unbelievable competitor.”

Sanchez seemed to indicate that he didn’t believe Tebow had a real shot at a job.

“We needed another guy to throw while Sam’s (Bradford) still recovering,” Sanchez said, according to CSN Philadelphia. “So that’s the reason (for the signing), at least as explained to me.”

There may be some truth to that, because Bradford is not expected to be ready for the beginning of OTA’s next month.

But if Sanchez thought Tebow wasn’t going to be competing for a job, it sounds like he was mistaken.

“If we were just going to have guys throw drills,” Kelly said, “we’d take [Mike] Mayock in the offseason and bring him down here and let him throw to them.”

Looks like somebody stands corrected and by the coach too! 🙂

Sanchez is not going to get the free ride he had wit the Jets because Ryan was not going to play T under any circumstance. I think Kelly is salivating over the tapes with T and Ball and Mcghee and sees 2000 +
season for Murry and big play TD passes in the playoffs that T had against Pitts.

  2. jp says:

What Genius? How about when Phil. plays arch rival Dallas and Murry runs for 175 yrds plus against his ex. T runs for 2 + touchdowns and throws for 2+ TD s It’s been Done Before.

JP: Like your take on “GENIUS” for Coach Kelly a lot better and where will be able to see coverage of Monday’s team events in Philly?

  3. David says:

I understand that Coach Kelly gets to see them in practice for the first time tomorrow 5-4-15.

I found some confirmation regarding tomorrow..
      Q. Where is Sam Bradford right now? Where is he?

COACH KELLY: “He’s in Philly. He was here today. I expect to see him tomorrow rehabbing. He’s on schedule from talking to our doctors and our trainers. I think when we traded for him the following Sunday, he was in this building, and he’s been here every day since. I think he’s gone home one weekend. He’s working extremely hard. Really progressing out there. Monday will be the first day for us where we actually go on the field with him as coaches. So the last two weeks of the offseason program is what’s called phase one. So we had meetings with the players and they were with our strength and conditioning coaches. So we’ll actually get on the field with all of our players on Monday for the first time. So it’s our first look at what he is and where he is and what he can do.

David O.: Looks like Tebow was the “best available” according to Coach Kelly. Beginning to think this guy is no nonsense and actually wants to WIN! Thanks for the link, David O. Hope there is a channel we can watch for team updates on 5-4-15.

    • ck says:

Thanks for the update, David and would like to know where to find coverage on 5-4-15 of the above?

ck – Have not found any details of this practice Yet..

However, I did find this updated summary opinion of TT & Eagles QB Status: from Zach Berman, Inquirer Staff Writer, Posted: Monday, May 4, 2015, 9:41 AM ..

One of the reasons quarterback Tim Tebow is in Philadelphia is G.J. Kinne. Kinne has been on the Eagles’ practice squad the past two seasons. The team likes him, but Kinne believed he had a better chance of making the team if he wasn’t a quarterback. The Eagles have used Kinne in a variety of ways during practice, such as extra wide receiver and special teams player, because they needed numbers. Kinne wants to try to make a role in the way he’s used at practice. Chip Kelly described it as a “multi-purpose player” on the offense who can help at running back and wide receiver, along with a special teams role.

That meant the Eagles had one fewer quarterback on the roster. Enter Tebow. Kelly called him the “best guy available.”

For those who want Tebow to make the roster, it’s fair to say he has a better chance now than before the draft. The Eagles did not draft a quarterback. They did not sign one in rookie free agency. If you take Kinne out of the equation, then it’s Matt Barkley and Tebow competing for the No. 3 spot. Barkley is the better passer and has more experience in the offense, but he’ll need to hold off Tebow – especially if Kelly is looking for more value from the No. 3 QB than just quarterback skills.

        • Sage says:

Thanks. I don’t accept that Kinne or anyone else is a better passer than Tebow. Certainly wans’t in the NCAA.

Almost all the QBs in the NFL throw 65 percent of their passes under 10 yards, often completing them behind the line of scrimmage. Tebow had a vastly disproportionate percentage of passes down field, beyond 10 yards, plus the leagues highest # of dropped passes. Balls were bouncing off Decker and Thomas all season in 2008.

In 2010, during his 2 games under interim coach Studesville, Tebow through like an all pro, hitting over 300 yards in the win against Houston.

Sure, over the years everyone trying to tweak Tebow’s motion has created some weak throws. But Tebow is a great athlete and the best competitor in the NFL. On any play that matters, I’d take him over anyone else, including Manning or Brady. But that’s just me.

          • Sage says:

            “Threw” like an all-pro.

          • David says:

Thanks for the info David O. All of the teams in the NFL have onsite NFL reporters that put up info on the team’s website daily. The video section will have clips of the players in action during practice. Some of the reporting was biased against Tebow in New England. Once, I had to read 3 different sources to find out that Tebow actually outscored Brady and Mallett 17-14 in a scrimmage game. He threw 2 TDS to Quinton Sims, the same player that caught the 2 TDS in the Giants preseason game. He was also cut after a short time on the practice squad.

          • ck says:

Sage: Think the same about Tebow regarding the other misfits due to his phenomenal leadership skills and determination to never give up…can’t wait to see him lead a team all the way to the SB!!!

        • ck says:

Thanks David O. and guess will have to look at the links etc. to find out. Was hoping they would have a channel that would be available for OTA’s and all.

  4. The Major says:

It depresses me that Tim is even mentioned in the same breath as Kinne.

I can’t express how much I hope his time with House has worked. I really can’t stand another idiotic debate about guys who were LUCKY to be drafted compared to the one of the best collegiate athletes of all time.

I just can’t fight that fight anymore.

Please Tebow, take the damn ball and run with it.

  5. ck says:

David: Thanks for sharing about Tebow outscoring “Brady” and how they try to bury the positives on T2. Think Elrot did the same when anyone on that team caught his passes b/c the next thing that happened was they were also traded as well. At least Coach Kelly believes in T2 and all you need is one!
