 — The Denver Broncos released veteran kicker Matt Prater, the team’s longest-tenured player, Friday, just days before he was set to return to the team.Prater missed the first three games while serving a suspension after testing positive for alcohol — something that was prohibited for him by the league after a 2011 DUI arrest — last spring.

Prater will be a free agent when his suspension is lifted on Monday. He converted a league-best 96% of his field goals (25-for-26) in 2013.

By releasing him, the Broncos have decided to stick with Brandon McManus, whom they acquired in a trade with the New York Giants in late August.

Prater was on the third season of a four-year, $13 million contract. His departure will free up cap room for a team seeking long-term extensions with receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas.
