Chicago (AFP) – Quarterback Jay Cutler, who missed four games with an ankle injury this season, has re-signed with the Chicago Bears, the National Football League team announced Thursday.

Cutler’s seven-year deal will take him through the 2020 NFL season. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We’re very excited to have Jay for the long term,” said Bears general manager Phil Emery on Thursday. “He battled through the tough times and kept fighting.”

The Bears re-signed Cutler despite losing their final two games of the season and finished with a 8-8 record.

Some NFL observers felt backup Josh McCown played better during Cutler’s four-game absence but it wasn’t enough to convince first-year coach Marc Trestman that McCown should take over the starting role permanently.

Eight-year veteran Cutler completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 2,621 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this past season.

Cutler began his career with Denver and spent three seasons in Colorado before being dealt to Chicago before the start of the 2009 season.

He is 39-28 as the starter for the Bears, leading them to the NFC Championship game in the 2010 season.

Cutler just completed his fifth season with the Bears and was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

I doubt this guy has ever played a full season without an injury…go figure and w/his ATTITUDE!!! McD did Denver a favor when he sent him packing along w/his side-kick who had more than enough criminal drama on and off the field!!!
