With the Injury to Aaron Rodgers, Could the Packers Look at Tim Tebow

Could it Be “Tebow Time” for the Green Bay Packers?

COMMENTARY | The Green Bay Packers were highly favored heading into their game with the Chicago Bears, but the worst nightmare for a Packers fan came to reality. Aaron Rodgers was scrambling to his right trying to make a play happen in the redzone when the Bears’ defenders converged on him and took him down hard. Rodgers got up fairly fast, but after a few steps it was obvious that he was in major pain. Just a couple minutes later he jogged into the locker room and was unable to return to the game.

If the injury to Rodgers is something that could keep him out long-term, the Packers very well could look to the free agent market to find a quarterback who could be a better option than current backup Seneca Wallace. Wallace struggled against the Bears all night and was unable to move the football in his first action for the Packers on the season.

One name that is intriguing to think about heading to Green Bay is Tim Tebow. While he isn’t loved by a lot of football fans for one reason or another, he just wins football games. Obviously the Packers have two great running backs in Eddie Lacy and James Starks, but adding Tebow’s ability to run would give yet another intriguing option to head coach Mike McCarthy and the offense.

The one thing about Tebow is the question about his arm accuracy. He has been improving his mechanics since he was traded by the Denver Broncos and does look better, but there are still some major concerns. Tebow is one of the hardest working players in the NFL and under the right coaching could become a very solid backup quarterback, but you can’t take away his playmaking ability. He may not have the best arm or the best mechanics, but he was able to do enough to take a Broncos team that started the season slow to the NFL Playoffs and a playoff win to go along with it.

Tebow is a polarizing figure and that could be a very good thing for the Packers with the injury to Rodgers. Fans are very hesitant to show any kind of faith in Seneca Wallace after his terrible outing against the Bears and Tebow would no doubt bring a spark. Despite the questions surrounding his arm, he’s shown the ability to perform at high levels. Another thing to think about is the fact that he does have a very good arm when throwing the football deep. He struggles mainly on passes around 15 yards away, not necessarily deep balls.

If Rodgers is out for any length of time, you can expect to see the Packers become much more dependent on the run no matter who they start at quarterback. Eddie Lacy has shown the ability to carry the football at an extremely high level and James Starks is a very good backup running back as well. McCarthy will use the ground game much more to take some pressure off of whoever they have throwing the football.

Why would the Packers pick Tim Tebow? There are some other options like Matt Flynn or Vince Young out there, but I think Tebow brings everything that the Packers are looking for. He’s got a decent arm and is able to make plays, but also will bring the fans excitement. With a track record of taking his team to the playoffs, he has that experience under his belt as well. Tebow has been adamant that he will not switch from the position of quarterback and that he just wants an opportunity, and that could be exactly what has opened up for the Green Bay Packers.

Overall, this would be a very interesting move that would capture the attention of the entire NFL. Tebow has the track record that Green Bay will be looking for in their quarterback search assuming they need to, and he’s a very coachable player as well. The Packers are hoping that this move would be for a short-term type of situation, but Tebow seems to be one of the best options out there on the table for Green Bay at this time. Would Tim Tebow succeed in Green Bay? Only time time would tell that, but he has come through in situations where many expected him to fail and takes pride in his ability to shock the world.
