Tim Tebow, tight end? Tall tales aside, Patriots see him as QB

While the New England Patriots wait out the legal problems of tight end Aaron Hernandez, speculation continues on the future of Tim Tebow. There is a theory the team will convert him to tight end.

Not so, ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss said on SportsCenter recently. He and several observers say the Pats acquired Tebow to be a third-string quarterback.
Tim Tebow: Tight end isn’t the direction he’s headed. (AP Photo)Conjure up all the notions about why. Tebow is stronger on the run than as a passer; that could mean Bill Belichick is thinking of ways to use the Wildcat scheme. Tebow is left-handed; that would be a change from Tom Brady and backup Ryan Mallett.

Owner Robert Kraft is a big Tebow supporter. And just to mention, having an all-American hero on the roster isn’t a bad thing during the Hernandez mess.

As for tight ends, remember: The Pats picked up former New York Giants TE Jake Ballard; have Michael Hoomanawanui, a good H-back; a solid blocker in Daniel Fells; and undrafted rookies Zach Sudfeld and Brandon Ford showing promise.

Things would be better if Rob Gronkowski were healthy, but he is recovering from back surgery and an offseason of health issues, with five surgeries in all. Four were to his left forearm.

While Gronkowski is expected to make a full recovery, there is doubt he’ll be ready for Sept. 8’s 2013 opener against the Bills.

Remember, too, that Hernandez had offseason shoulder surgery. Given those health problems, the Pats were wise to load up on tight ends to fit their scheme.

But barring something unforeseen (and remember, we are talking Belichick here), Tebow will be a quarterback until proven otherwise.

Happy 4th, ya’ll! We are socked in with the rain today so it’s the movies instead of the beach. But, as always, God Bless America!
